Internet standards (and many others) are issued as 'Request for Comment' documents (RFCs). Virtually all RFCs are available on-line at various sites throughout the world -- one such site is the Sunsite Northern Europe.
There are many RFCs - the mirror sites tend to present them as links such as
rfc1945.txt
which isn't much use if you don't know the particular RFC number. A very useful
document is:
rfc-index.txtwhich lists the RFCs each with its number, title, status etc. This index is itself a large document -- over 400k!
