This specification not only is the definitive text on COM, but is also readable! Don't bother printing it out unless you have a truly sustainable source of paper - it is large.
This is an excellent book on COM -- more aimed to the C++ programmer, but it has the great advantage of not being incredibly wordy. Also, it contains the excellent piece of advice 'Just because you can put peas up your nose, it doesn't mean that you should'.
