This document describes:

  1. configuration of the demonstration CAT system
  2. starting the CAT system
  3. connecting to the CAT system
  4. logging on to the CAT system

Starting Up

The demonstration CAT system is started automatically when you log on to your computer -- there is a shortcut in the Start/Programs/Startup section.

When the CAT is running, there is a small 'claw' icon in the system tray -- this is typically the bottom right-hand corner of the display.

A right-mouse click on the CAT icon brings up a menu with the following options:

Openstart Microsoft Internet Explorer which connects to the CAT
Documentationshow the front page of the CAT documentation
Aboutshow version information for the CAT
Exitshutdown the CAT server

Connecting to the CAT

The two methods for connecting to the CAT are:

  1. with your web browser -- to process applications, arrange interviews etc.
  2. by email -- to submit CVs and email queries

Web Connection

The home page of your CAT system is at http://scorpion.carapace.co.uk/cat.htm. From this page you can send in CVs to the system, arrange interviews, run reports etc.

Mail Connection

The CAT receives CVs by email and routes them through the recruitment process. All mail addresses within your CAT system are in the mail domain:

    scorpion.carapace.co.uk

The demonstration database contains the following pre-configured job types:

job type email address
Developerdev@scorpion.carapace.co.uk
Project Engineereng@scorpion.carapace.co.uk

To submit a test CV for a Developer job, send an email to dev@scorpion.carapace.co.uk with the CV as a mail attachment.

There are three ways you can mail test CVs into the CAT:

  1. (Simplest) Use the Carapace message store interface -- this provides a simple web interface onto the messages held by the CAT for the test users. The link called messaging at the base of the CAT home page will let you compose and send mail messages.

You can also list and view the mail messages stored for the configured users. For example, log on to the Carapace Message Stores as user admin with password xxxxxx and you will see any mail messages stored for this user.

  2. (Medium) Configure your email program (e.g. Microsoft Outlook) to send messages to the CAT using the SMTP protocol and to receive messages from the CAT using the POP3 protocol. To do this you will require the following settings:

    CAT SMTP host scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    CAT SMTP port 25

    and

    CAT POP3 host scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    CAT POP3 port 110

To configure your mail program to receive messages for the demo user admin, use the following values:

    user name admin
    password xxxxxx
    email address admin@scorpion.carapace.co.uk

  3. (Hardest...but best!) Get your System Adminstrator to configure your corporate mail gateway for the domain scorpion.carapace.co.uk to the CAT using the following settings:

    CAT mail domain scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    CAT SMTP host scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    CAT SMTP port 25

Configure the CAT to send external messages to your corporate mail gateway using SMTP by entering the 'remote mail' settings i.e.:

    remote mail host 10.2.0.1
    remote mail port 25

Logging on to the CAT

When the CAT is running, the home page is here.

You must provide a valid user name and password to log on to the CAT. In addition you will often be asked for the required access level. If the user doesn't exist, or the password is wrong or if that user does not have the requested access level then an authentication failure will occur and access will be denied.

The demo database contains several users already configured -- the most powerful demo user has the following details:

user name admin
password xxxxxx
access level administrator

Note that the user names and passwords are case sensitive.

Since the admin user is an administrator it can set up other users etc. by clicking on the MAINTAIN bubble on the CAT user interface.

Other demo users are listed here -- they all have the same password xxxxxx as admin i.e. six lowercase x's.

Submitting a CV

CVs are submitted to the CAT via email. You can mail in CVs using your mail program if you have done the extra configuration. Otherwise, you can always use the messaging link at the bottom of the CAT home page.

Each job type within the CAT corresponds to a mail address. The ones pre-configured in the demo database are as follows:

job type email address
Developerdev@scorpion.carapace.co.uk
Project Engineereng@scorpion.carapace.co.uk

For example, the following steps will send in the CV for Fred Flintstone who is looking for a Developer job:

  1. click on the messaging link at the bottom of the CAT home page and log on as user admin password xxxxxx
  2. compose a new message with the following details:

    From admin@scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    To dev@scorpion.carapace.co.uk
    Subject Fred Flintstone

  3. enter some text to form the cover letter
  4. browse to add, say, an HTML file or Microsoft Word file attachment containing the CV.
  5. click the Send button

The CAT will send back an acknowledgement to the admin user.
